During Aberdeenshire Towns Partnership (ATP) time  in Huntly (2005-08) it was considered that the availability of workspace for small businesses, especially local tradesmen, was limiting their business development.


HDT decided to test whether this was the case and commissioned Douglas Wheeler Associates to examine the market demand for a range of industrial units providing a variety of types of flexible accommodation that could meet the changing needs of local businesses. Thereafter, if demand was identified, HDT could play a role in ensuring that it is met, whether by lobbying, becoming involved in a joint venture or self-developing units. Any buildings would have to be constructed to a high environmental standard.


The results of the study were disappointing in that levels of demand were low and too low to justify the risk that speculative development of units would bring with it. The project has therefore been shelved for the time being.
