Despite recent improvements in levels of recycling in the UK, including Aberdeenshire, we still lag behind many European countries in this respect. More must be done both to prevent waste production in the first place and recycle waste that is produced.

Potential opportunities exist for improved waste recycling at local level in Huntly and District. These include community composting, wood reclamation and bicycle refurbishment. In this project HDT would seek to make use of the waste streams at local level so reducing the amount of waste disposed of to landfill, reducing ‘waste miles’ incurred by transporting waste to a central processing facility and potentially providing employment and training. Some of the recycled materials could potentially be sold locally to create an income stream.

However, recycling is a complex area and any project will have to be researched thoroughly before a decision is made to proceed. The first step in this project is therefore a feasibility study.
