West Coast Energy (WCE) has lodged an appeal against the decision in August 2012 by the local planning authority to refuse planning permission for the 9 turbine Cairnborrow Wind Farm just outside Huntly. Should the appeal be upheld a ‘virtual’ turbine in the development will belong to the local community through WCE’s partnership with Huntly Development Trust. This equates to a ninth of the income from the development, or an estimated £6 million over the lifetime of the project. The appeal process is likely to take between 3-6 months so a decision can be expected in the spring or early summer of 2013. HDT negotiated the virtual turbine on behalf of the local community to provide more significant benefit from the scheme should it go ahead.
